We welcomed Nina Hoven at The Star on 1 August in preparation for her Inspire EX session and were able to sit down with her for a quick and insightful Q&A:

Describe yourself in 3 words.
Positive, organised, fun.

What are the most important qualities successful executive assistants have today?
Remaining calm under pressure, being able to manage multiple projects, people and priorities and all the while being approachable and available to staff as well as maintaining confidentiality and being trustworthy.

What tactics do you use to manage pressure and stress day-to-day?
I plan my day well…scheduling projects into the diary around meetings and other commitments to keep me on track…and coffee helps!

What is one common challenge people face in the event management industry today?
In my experience it is all about managing changes. The client changes their mind all the time about themes, timing, all the different elements of an event and so we have to keep the communication lines open to ensure we make changes as they happen.

What advice would you give to someone looking at a career in the event industry?
You need to have a calm demeanor…managing events is a very stressful role due to the fact that curve balls will be thrown at you constantly and clients tend to make changes throughout the process. You need to be able to take this on without getting flustered.

Tell us something we may not know about the role of an executive assistant?
EA’s these days are very much in a business partnership with their executive. We are accountable for a lot of high level responsibilities and relied upon for advice as well as decision making. People used to always try to “get past” the EA to get to the executive. I find now that people want to “get to” the EA first! We either handle the issue straight away or find time for the exec to deal with it.
